Our Mission

Jason Hayes and Verena Hoppe are the founders of HayHop Sunkorb in Cape Town. Their mission is to introduce the German Beach Chairs called Strandkörbe to South Africa. Jason is a certified and qualified carpenter, woodworker, and joiner with a 20-year-old carpentry business in Cape Town. Verena was born and raised in Düsseldorf, Germany, and has a qualification in Marketing Communication. She has worked for several advertising agencies over the years and has a love of travel and enjoyment of other cultures, which has informed her knack for identifying new trends.

How It All Began

Jason and Verena, now married, have homes in Düsseldorf and Cape Town, where they aim to combine their South African and German lifestyles. They conceived the idea of introducing South Africans to Strandkörbe while holidaying on the windy German island of Sylt. Sunbathing on the beach in a cozy Strandkorb while the wind whipped around them, they began daydreaming about doing the same thing on windy days in South Africa.

Shortly thereafter, they contacted DeVries about the possibility of exclusively selling their products in South Africa. DeVries has a legacy of design and quality finishes, which has resulted in them becoming the market leader in Strandkörbe. The product carries a warranty from its places of production in both Germany and Indonesia (where they are manufactured under strict German Standards of Quality).

Jason and Verena offer a personable and obliging service while delivering on a promise to sell only the highest quality products that are not "made in China." They are very excited about being able to introduce this unique, beautiful, and useful product to South Africans.
